After 10 years as a Navy Personnel Specialist, I made the transition to IT infrastructure. Here’s how I did it and lessons learned along the way.

Transferable Skills

My Navy experience provided a strong foundation:

Data Management: Maintaining personnel records taught me database fundamentals, data integrity, and reporting.

Attention to Detail: Military precision translated well to configuration management and documentation.

Security Awareness: Handling sensitive personnel data prepared me for cybersecurity practices.

Process Orientation: Following strict procedures prepared me for ITIL and change management.

The Transition Path

Step 1: Pre-Apprenticeship Training

I completed TLG Learning’s Network Development Engineer program, earning:

  • CompTIA Network+
  • CompTIA Linux+
  • AWS Cloud Practitioner
  • Python programming skills

Step 2: Certification Strategy

I pursued stackable certifications:

  1. CompTIA A+ - Foundation
  2. CompTIA Network+ - Networking fundamentals
  3. CompTIA Security+ - Security baseline
  4. CompTIA Linux+ - Server administration
  5. AWS CCP - Cloud fundamentals
  6. Azure Fundamentals - Microsoft cloud

Step 3: Hands-On Practice

  • Built a home lab with virtualization
  • Created GitHub projects
  • Contributed to open-source

Finding the Right Opportunity

My current role at Wipro supporting the Microsoft Innovation Hub was ideal because:

  • It valued my security clearance
  • It offered diverse technology exposure
  • It provided enterprise-scale experience

Advice for Veterans

  1. Start with CompTIA: A+, Network+, Security+ are veteran-friendly and widely recognized

  2. Use GI Bill: Many training programs accept GI Bill benefits

  3. Highlight Soft Skills: Leadership, teamwork, and discipline are valued in IT

  4. Network Actively: Connect with other veterans in tech; they’re eager to help

  5. Be Patient: The transition takes time; expect 6-12 months of focused effort

Resources That Helped

  • VetTec: For technical training
  • Hiring Our Heroes: Networking events
  • LinkedIn Veteran Communities: Mentorship and advice
  • ClearanceJobs: For cleared positions

The discipline and work ethic from military service are tremendous assets in IT. Combined with the right technical training, veterans can build successful technology careers.
